Vashon has routine winter storms that are often accompanied by snow, an extended freeze and high winds that bring down trees. Frequently those trees also bring down overhead utility lines disrupting electrical service and communication lines (Internet, Phone, TV) to various neighborhoods around Vashon-Maury Islands. While mainly an inconvenience, these events can spell trouble for those without alternative forms of heat, backup power generators, or water.
Maintaining good relations with neighbors and having basic supplies laid in are probably the best solution for not having these inconveniences become something more serious. These storms actually serve as excellent annual reminders for Vashon residents to maintain our emergency supplies - and not take mother nature for granted.
Washington does get other severe weather - including serious tornados.
