Pneumonia Vaccine Guidelines Have Changed

We’re heading into the fall respiratory infection season, which can pose health challenges for older adults, very young children, and anyone with underlying medical conditions that may increase their risk. Guidelines for pneumonia vaccinations have been expanded to include vaccinations for adults 50-64 years old. Learn more about Washington Department of Health’s (DOH’s) recommendations for adults 50 and older at tinyurl.com/WA-DOH-Vax-Recs

About Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a lower respiratory tract infection that causes coughing, fever, chest pain, and, in severe cases, breathing trouble, which can lead to the need for supplemental oxygen or even mechanical ventilation. About 150,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized for pneumococcal pneumonia each year, and about one in 20 (7,500) of those die from the disease. The very young, elderly, and people with certain underlying medical conditions are more susceptible to serious disease from pneumonia. People sometimes catch bacterial pneumonia after a bad case of influenza, COVID, or another respiratory infection has increased their susceptibility.

Who should get vaccinated? While anyone can get pneumonia, federal guidelines now recommend the vaccine for all children under five, adults 50 and older, and anyone with specific health conditions that put them at risk. These guidelines are supported by DOH.

Which vaccine is right for me? There are currently three pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs): PCV15, PCV20, PCV21; and one pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV): PPSV23. The number at the end of the name tells how many bacterial strains the vaccine protects against. Talk to your primary care provider or pharmacist about whether you need a pneumonia vaccination, and which vaccine may be right for you.

How effective are they? While they can’t prevent all cases of pneumonia, these vaccines work well for covered strains. For instance, studies show that PPSV23 protects 60-70% of adults with healthy immune systems from getting pneumococcal infections.

September is National Preparedness Month

As preparedness nerds, we find it motivating to remind ourselves that it’s a lot more fun to be able to offer help than to have to ask for it.

Join us for National Preparedness Month with a special event at Vashon Library on September 9th from 5:30 to 7pm. Learn about preparing for emergencies with King County Emergency Management. Play “Ready, Prep Go!” a preparedness game that encourages people to think through emergency preparedness decision making for hazards that may affect King County residents, including earthquakes, wildfires, winter storms and more. Representatives from VashonBePrepared and Vashon Island Fire and Rescue will be available to answer your questions. All ages welcome. Registration not required.

What else can you do this September to be a better resource for your household, family, friends and neighbors? If you’re not planning on traveling, Labor Day weekend might be a good time to take a few simple steps to strengthen your household’s resilience before the next winter storm.

  • Get help to start a NERO (Neighborhood Emergency Response Organization) at vashonbeprepared.org/prepare-your-neighborhood
  • Get on the list for next year’s CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training by emailing cert@vashonbeprepared.org
  • Volunteer with VashonBePrepared: use your skills and experience to boost community resilience, while learning more about Vashon’s disaster preparedness and response teams. Let us know your areas of interest at vashonbeprepared.org/volunteer – we look forward to meeting you!

Lots of folks are feeling the pinch this year with higher gas and grocery prices – how can you get more prepared, but at a lower cost?

  • Visit vashonbeprepared.org/prepare-household and review a checklist.
  • Find your flashlight or headlamp and some extra batteries, and stow them in an old backpack – you’ve just started a go bag. It’s surprising how many go-bag items we already own – put them together for quick access.
  • Sign up for free or low-cost training such as CPR, AED, first aid, and Stop the Bleed classes. A quick online search brings up multiple options.
  • Stock up your emergency kit with non-perishable (canned, jarred, or dry) food, and use up foods in your kit or pantry before they expire.
  • Jot down important phone numbers and store them in your emergency kit.

You’ll not only save money by preparing in advance, you’ll also gain peace of mind. More tips here: ready.gov/low-and-no-cost
