Tim Johnson serves as Superintendent of the Vashon Health Care District (VHCD), a public hospital district — the 59th in Washington state — formed after Vashon-Maury Island voters decided overwhelmingly to establish it, following an earlier failed attempt 13 years before.
Johnson has deep roots in Vashon Island community and healthcare work. He moved to Vashon in 2009 after a career as an organic food executive and quickly became active in community service. He served as president of the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council from 2010 to 2013, during a period of transition in the council’s structure. For roughly a decade before his district role, he was involved in island healthcare efforts including the Vashon-Maury Healthcare Collaborative and the campaign to establish VHCD itself, and he has managed Granny’s Attic — a nonprofit thrift store that supports Vashon’s community needs.
Johnson was named interim superintendent of VHCD, tasked with helping the district navigate its relationship with Sea Mar Community Health Centers and finalize the district’s annual budget. He has since continued in the superintendent role in a permanent capacity, leading the district through several major initiatives:
Following the district’s split from Sea Mar Community Health Centers, he helped guide a shift in focus toward urgent care services and growing behavioral health care, particularly for children, informed by community town halls and outreach.
He was authorized by the VHCD board to sign a contract with DispatchHealth to provide urgent care services on the island, which he executed in August 2024.
He signed a three-year funding agreement with Vashon Island Fire & Rescue committing VHCD to $1.5 million in tax revenue to support the Mobile Integrated Health program, which delivers nonemergency medical and social services to islanders.
He has overseen the district’s budget planning, including a 2025 levy of roughly $1.95 million, holding steady with prior years.
Johnson describes his professional background as eclectic, spanning law enforcement and security, food manufacturing, distribution, sales, brand development, project management, political campaign strategy, nonprofit leadership, retail operations, and local governance.
