Vashon CERT Training Opportunities

Vashon CERT offers progressive training that prepares members for participation in the CERT organization. Training is broken down into three levels:

CERT Basic CourseĀ

Our free CERT Basic Course is our gateway into the team for those members of the public interested in becoming a part of CERT. It is comprised of three phases over the course of nine (9) weekly trainings:

  • Phase 1 – Household Disaster Preparedness (Open to the public)
  • Phase 2 – Intro to Disaster Response Skills for Citizens (Open to the public)
  • Phase 3 – Team organization and response on Vashon Island

Phases 1 and 2 are public access training to provide introduction to basic information on handling emergencies. Phase 3 is reserved for those interested in joining the team as active members moving forward.

The Basic Course is usually offered every one to two years. If interested, please let us know and we will reach out to let you know the next time the course is offered.

Core Supplementary Training (Required)

Once new members complete the Basic Course, we have five Core Supplementary Trainings that are required to continue your journey of being part of the CERT team. These are a mix of one session classroom training and online FEMA training that expand upon the basic knowledge set.

Extracurricular Training

Finally, we provide ongoing opportunities to expand your skill set as well as practice your knowledge with training beyond the regular curriculum. These are offered several times a year and include the chance for the CERT team members to get out in the field to get hands-on practice with the skills learned.
