Vashon’s Seasonal Challenge: Increased Landslide Risk

Vashon and Maury Islands have their share of landslide-prone areas, especially along shoreline bluffs and other areas with steep slopes. Most of these areas are primarily at risk of shallow landslides, but some are also at risk of deep-seated landslides. Learn more about how to identify slide-prone areas, and what you can do to reduce risk.

Two main types of slides: Shallow landslides typically originate within the root zone, while deep-seated landslides originate below the root zone. Deep-seated landslides generally affect larger areas and may move slowly over a long period of time before they are suddenly triggered and move more quickly. Deep-seated landslide areas can be recognized by naturally wet or marshy areas called sag ponds that are wedged between land that is higher upslope and downslope, hummocky (uneven/jumbled) terrain, and bent (“pistol-butted”) trees. Geoscientists use high-resolution images of the land surface to confirm some of these features and to help identify historical landslides (zoom in on Vashon at tinyurl.com/VashonLidar). The presence of historical landslides is a strong indicator of potential future slides.

What makes the earth move? There are multiple triggers for both shallow and deep-seated landslides, including earthquakes and undercutting of shoreline bluffs by waves. Another important trigger, however, is water-logged soils. It’s why we see most land-sliding on Vashon during the rainy season.

What can we do to reduce the risk of slides? While we can’t control the weather, we can control how we manage surface-water drainage and vegetation. Trees and bushes may block a view, but their roots hold on to soil and rocks that may otherwise slide more readily. Improving the drainage of a property may reduce its landslide risk, but care must be taken to not increase the risk of neighboring properties. Before making significant changes to surface-water drainage or vegetation in landslide-prone areas, it’s a good idea to consult a licensed geotechnical expert or check with the county.

What if it slides? If you see or hear signs of active landsliding, you should evacuate the area immediately and call 911. Signs of active landsliding include movement of rock, soil, or vegetation, growing cracks in the ground, sticking doors and windows, broken pipes, cracks in walls and foundations, sagging or taut utility lines, cracking wood, and other unusual sounds. Healthy Kids and Staff: School Vaccination Clinics

COVID-19 and flu vaccination clinics are scheduled for school-aged island youth and school staff at Vashon High School on Tuesday, October 20, and McMurray Middle School on Thursday, October 22. The clinics are offered by Vashon Pharmacy assisted by VashonBePrepared volunteers in collaboration with Vashon Island School District (VISD). Parents will receive registration and clinic information shortly from VISD and independent schools.

Mark Your Calendar: Senior Screenings and Wellness, SafeSitter classes, community CPR

Vashon Healthcare District is offering a Senior Screening and Wellness event. It’s free and open to island residents of all ages, with a special focus on supporting our seniors. The event takes place at JG Commons, 17300 96th PL SW, on Saturday, Nov 14, from 10am to 2pm.

Join them for a day dedicated to health and well-being. Offerings include a hearing screening by Chatterbugs’ Terra Boulse-Archaro, foot care by Janice Randall, and mobility and balance sessions by Carrie Chambers. Blood pressure, glucose screenings, and vaccinations are provided by Vashon Medical Reserve Corps.

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) is planning upcoming Safe Sitter classes on November 14 and December 12. Signup is online at vifr.org/vifr-safe-sitter/

You can also sign up with VIFR for the next free community CPR class on November 10th from 6-8pm. Experts recommend taking CPR every year, since (hopefully) you haven’t had a chance to practice. Learn hands-only CPR, plus how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and how to administer naloxone (also known by brand name Narcan), a nasal spray to help people recover from an opioid overdose.
