Get Vaccinated: COVID-19 Surge Has Started

A surge of COVID-19 infections is underway in King County and throughout the Pacific Northwest. People of all ages remain at risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and Long COVID. Trusted national medical organizations and the West Coast Health Alliance recommend COVID-19 vaccinations for people of all ages who want to reduce their risk of severe disease, but especially the very young (younger than 2 years), elderly (65 and older), anyone with risk factors, and anyone in close contact with those with risk factors (tinyurl.com/2026Recommendations).

Volunteer-assisted vaccination clinics for COVID-19, influenza (flu), and RSV started at Vashon Pharmacy on September 29. Make your appointment online at vashonpharmacy.com or by calling the pharmacy at 206-463-9118. COVID-19 and flu vaccinations will also be offered to school-aged island youth and school staff at Vashon High School on October 20, and at McMurray Middle School on October 22. Parents will receive sign-up information through Vashon Island School District (VISD) and independent schools.

All islanders can receive respiratory-virus season vaccinations with no out-of-pocket cost, regardless of health insurance status, thanks to the state’s Childhood Vaccine Program and a grant from the Vashon Health Care District. If you need advice on which vaccines to get when, please consult your healthcare provider.

Report: Conference on America’s Rural Healthcare Crisis

On September 12th, healthcare providers and organizations gathered in Tacoma, to bear witness to the depth of America’s rural healthcare crisis. Attendees came from Washington, Alaska, Idaho, and Oregon.

Sponsoring organizations included University of Washington Office of Rural Programs, Washington Area Health Education Center, VashonBePrepared, and Vashon Island Medical Reserve Corps.
More than one-dozen experts spent an entire day describing the consequences for small-town America, and what actions to take in order to mitigate the crisis. Out of the conference came a Declaration to Congress that stated: “We declare that Congress must act to stabilize rural healthcare availability and affordability by collaborating with those who know the rural healthcare challenges and solutions firsthand.” Representative Emily Randall (WA-06) gave the closing address. Learn more, watch the presentation videos and read the full Declaration at the conference website votehealth.org.
