2nd Food Storage for Emergencies Workshop Announced

Food SecurityDue to the high demand, a SECOND series of Food Storage for Emergencies workshops will be held on three Monday evenings, 7-9 pm! See details below. Please pre-register and pass the word!

Vashon’s Food Security Working Group will be hosting a series of workshops to help families learn to stock their pantries for all sorts of emergencies­-from earthquakes to power outages to job layoffs. Three Food Storage for Emergencies workshops will take place every other Monday, beginning February 6, 7:00 -- 9:00 pm.

  • Session 1. Emergency Preparedness February 6Making an emergency 72-hour food kit. Preparing to feed your family in all types of emergencies. Facilitated by Cathy Fulton.
  • Session 2. Three Month Food Supply Basics February 20Simple emergency pantries. Water. Budgeting. Using your stored food. Peace of mind. Facilitated by Gene Kuhns, Former Emergency Preparedness Specialist-­Mormon Church, Vashon Island.
  • Session 3. Keep the Process Going March 5Baby steps to make it easier to increase and enhance your food storage capacity. Facilitated by Elizabeth Sullivan.

The workshops will include demonstrations, samples, and games with prizes to make the process easy and fun. Each participant will receive a CD which includes the 100-page manual, Food Storage Made Easy, lots of handouts, and several Excel spreadsheets for planning.

Cost for the series is $20 per household. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by contacting Cathy Fulton, 463-5652, cathy@MariposaGardens.org. You may also contact Cathy with questions. Location information will be given upon registration.

In addition, a "Bonus Session" will be offered to anyone (no registration/no fee/open to the public) on Saturday, Feb 11, 10:00 am to Noon at the Land Trust Building. A consultant from Shelf Reliance Foods will be demonstrating and talking about their line of ready-made long-term foods, storage systems, and emergency supplies. Learn about, taste, and purchase food and emergency equipment.
